The Solar System: The Sun

The sun is the largest body in our solar system and all the planet revolve around it.

The Sun is a star - so when you look up at the night sky and see all the stars you are looking at other suns - some bigger, some smaller than our own star.

The photograph on the right shows some sun spots on the sun - these are areas of the sun which are cooler that other areas of the surface - but still very hot.

The sun is, on everage,150 million kilometres (93 million miles) away from the earth and has a diameter of 1.39 million kilometers (865,000 miles).

Its diameter is 109 times the diameter of earth.

You could put 1.3 million earths into the sun!
